Hunt Country Vignettes

Living in Northern Virginia

we naturally tend to pick up Hunt Country collectibles and I  incorporate them in our vignettes.

In the vignette below I have a Spode hunt plate mixed with a hunt tin and a hunt jewelry box.

My hunting dog came from my Grandmother's collection that she picked up in her travels to Europe.

He is one of my favorites so I use him a lot.

There are many farms and ranches around here and beautiful horses.

Loads of places to go horseback riding!

The Red Fox Inn is one of our favorite places to take family when they are up visiting from Florida....

history and wonderful food is a winning combination!

Fall in Northern Virginia is breathtaking! 

This year is looking to be one of the best!

Antlers and a Birdcage

 I don't know what causes it,

but when the seasons begin to change 

I just have to change our house around, too!

I start room by room....

 putting different things together....

until I like how it turns out.

Our dog found this set of antlers

 in our woods last year.....

thought I would mix them together 

with some dark framed pictures...

 and a black book...

add a hunt scene....

or two....

I found a birdcage.....

sprayed it a flat black....

placed teacups.....

a burlap coffee bag....

and a mercury glass bottle inside...

It looks quite nice 

on our  dining room sideboard....for now...

Who says you have to have expensive stuff to decorate with?

Look around you!

You just might have some antlers...

 or birdcages laying around....

Fall and Heavy Metal

I have been pulling out my heavy metal 

decorative stuff

 because Fall is going to be here before we know it.

Darker colors and metal objects just seem to cozy things a bit more when the weather has a chill in it.

The first container is a pickle jar,

 the second- a syrup bottle was sprayed with silver paint, 

the third-a salsa jar....faux mercury glass.

I realize that with this post I am exposing a secret! 

I know that every person in blog land has already experimented with this

 and posted MANY pictures and experiences.

 But....

it is what it is.....

I admit it! 

I had never tried making my own mercury glass with

  Krylon's Looking Glass paint and vinegar!

With Fall just around the corner I figured it was time!

 After all, I bought the stuff from Wally World a looong time ago.

 I had better use it before it was too cold outside to spray paint. 

I think they came out pretty good!

Our little cuties picture is in a Dollar General frame.

I did it and I am glad I did!

Update

Marty asked how I did it....
 1. First wash your jars...use Goo Gone if the labels are persnickety.
      2. Spray vinegar on the inside of your jar or bottle and whilst it is still wet
     3. Spray the Looking Glass paint  over the vinegar....use a napkin to distress, if you like

"Hoosier Daddy?"

In our little cottage we have a cupboard commonly known as a "Hoosier". In the 1930's all of the baking supplies were stored in these marvelous units.

We found our Hoosier in several pieces stored in a friends barn.

We painted it black...stained the doors...put beadboard in the back of the shelving.....

This is where I now store my baking supplies.

JOY!!!

Walmart carries these wonderful glass canisters.

I designed labels for all my staples [got tired of trying to remember which flour was which].

Candy Corn is a necessity of life, don't you know?  

White linens and Homer Laughlin dishes dress the shelf for Fall.

Some of our cookbooks are on top of the hoozier.

I made the stickers with paper that has an adhesive on the back...

just design them....

print ....

cut them out...

peel the paper off the back....

slap 'em on

We hang pictures, plates, wall-hangings, sconces, etc

all over the place ...gives a cozy, English cottage feel.

Even our refrigerator gets its Fall duds on. The lace is a curtain sheer doubled and draped over the fridge [looks pretty and keeps the dust at bay].

 Ooops! The  lampshade was crooked.

In the current economy every one is feeling the pinch of trying to make ends meet.


Some folks have been without employment for quite sometime. When you go through your closets this Fall remember to donate to your local shelters. Our church has opened a clothing and food pantry for the needy. Many centers around you would appreciate your stuff and even your time. You will get the benefit of knowing you have you have done a good deed!
