"Plays well with others."
When written on your report card meant that you kind of blended into the rest of the crowd....did not stick out as a trouble maker...you were just there.
Brown dishes had that same reputation.
At some points in the past Brown Ware was considered so boring dealers couldn't sell them. They were actually called 'Dead Ware'!
A few years ago Brown Ware started enjoying some new popularity...a shift in the way they were perceived.
Now, 'plays well with others.' means that they can be mixed with other dishes...Cream Ware, Red Transferware... any color that you can think of.

I think Brown Ware is quite lovely...even on it's own....and definitely 'plays well with others.'

I have some mismatched pieces of brownware and I love it. This pattern is so pretty! It does play well with others.
My girl friend just bought a huge set of these dishes at a consignment shop and she loves them! I enjoyed this story of the brown ware.

Visiting from TTT. Dead ware, huh? Very pretty. Looks very vintage. I have a soft pink rose pattern my grandma brought over from England that is also Johnson Bros. Love dishes. That is one thing I can never have enough but I would run out of room.

Your dishes are so pretty...love all the different shots you took...the clocks beautiful too. Who'd have thought the brown transferware was once called dead ware...I'd surely say that these days, it has made a come back and like you said....it does play well with others :)

I agree!This is one of my all time favorite china patterns and I have several other pieces that work with this, the browns with yellows and cranberries with a bit of blues, so lovely, I've mixed them in with my red and whites, and my brown and whites, lovely! Wonderful post!
Nothing wrong with this transferware. It is beautiful, just right for so many occasions. BTW, playing well with others is a under-appreciated concept and admirable trait that far too many people possess. Thanks for reminding me of it's importance. ~CJ
